Internship project (2014)

Urban Design Scenarios in Virtual Reality (Oculus Rift)

Technologies used

C# CityEngine Unity

Virtual Reality as a novel technology has not yet found its way yet into participation processes in spatial planning. With a first prototype, in which we displayed the City of Zurich today and how it might look like in the future, we were exploring the technological possibilities for Virtual Reality applications in the field of urban planning. Scenarios of future developments have been implemented as well as basic interactions such as a guided tour. The data was prepared in CityEngine, exported as FBX and imported in Unity where a specific set up made it possible to display the buildings on an Oculus Rift DK2. We have made very good experiences with both the technology and feedback from potential users.

Project Overview

The prototype "Zurich 2050" was shown at several exhibitions, e.g. at a talent market for IT at Zurich Main Station.
